Wood seems to be the most feared material in sex toys, in my opinion. Not only do people fear for their wallets, but they also, and most importantly, worry about splinters; with the price point marked for wood sex toys, they normally don’t give you splinters – unless you purposely break it and use the broken parts.
Unlike other materials, wood is not something where the “chemical” can be changed. The manufacturer would just use a good quality tree (any type of trees: oak, pine, cherry, walnut, etc.) and then hand craft it.
While sculpting it, the sculptors will spend more than half of the time to smooth and polish the surface of the toy so that the finishing can have a perfectly smooth, no splintery, finish.
But the toy can’t be just left like that. A special coating has to be used to wrap the whole product or else fluids will enter the wood making it bumpy, and splintery.
Whether that special coating/substance is safe or not, nobody will know, unless the manufacturer states or shares that information.
One of the most well-known manufacturers that create wood sex toys, NobEssence, shares the information that they use “Lubrosity™ coatings” which meet both the “USP Class IV and VI Medical Standards”. Other manufacturer might be using a different one.
- High quality
- Aesthetically pleasing
- Can be sterilized
*depends on the substance used to create the coating.
- Extremely pricey
- Not 100% non-porous
- Not 100% non-toxic
How does it feel? Is this material the right choice for me?
Wood sex toys are extremely smooth due to the coating of the toy. Most toys are extremely aesthetically pleasant and no two wood toys will be the exact same as not only are they handcrafted, but they are also sculpted from different parts of trees.
Since it’s never clear what type of coating a company is using, it is never clearly known if the substance used for the coating is safe or not. So I can’t say 100% sure that wood sex toys are non-porous or toxic-free. You’ll definitely have to check out with the manufacturer before purchasing a wood sex toy.
Additionally, unlike stainless steel or glass sex toys, wood will not allow much temperature play. It does retain heat very well, but it won’t go further than this. Also, even though wood sex toys are firm, they are not as rigid as stainless steel or glass (but still quite stiff). So if you’re not fond of materials that are too rigid or too soft, wood will be a great choice as it can also hit those spots without having the sensation that it’s hitting too hard.
Is wood durable?
With minimal care, wood sex toys can be extremely durable. Due to the finishing coating on most wood sex toys, fluids, water, liquid, etc. will not be absorbed in the wood allowing the wood to have a longer life span. However, wood sex toys may be cracked if dropped on hard floors. So be careful with that.
CARE & MAINTENANCE
Sex toys made of wood are fairly easy to clean.
- Non-abrasive Soap and warm water
- Antibacterial soap
- Rubbing alcohol (depends on the type of coating)
- 10% bleach (depends on the type of coating)
Since the coating of the toy might be different from one wood toy to another, it is definitely really important to read the instructions or inform with the manufacturer on the drying method. Some needs air dry while other needs to be dried with a soft cloth. Also, as it is not clear if wood sex toys are completely non-porous, I will recommend that you always use a condom when sharing with partner(s). As for storing wood toys, keep away from jelly jellies, and put them in a storage bag/box along with other toys.
Wood sex toys can be recycled! But please don’t do that unless they are broken! Keep it as a house decoration!
With a slightest bit of lubricant, whether it’s water-, silicone-, or oil-based, wood sex toys can become very slippery; a little bit goes a long way!
